Julia Steggerda-Corey is a visiting assistant professor of lawyering and Donald Gaines Murray Teaching Fellow at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where she teaches Legal Writing I and II to first-year students. Her scholarship focuses on the child welfare system, civil rights, social justice, and race and the law.

Prior to joining Maryland Carey Law, Professor Steggerda-Corey served as an instructor of law and director of the Risk Management and Compliance Program at Drake University Law School. There, she led courses in domestic and international regulatory law and legal writing, directed graduate programs, and collaborated on institution-wide diversity initiatives. She has also taught on topics such as social identity and the law.

Before entering academia, Professor Steggerda-Corey practiced law in the Business Litigation group at Faegre Baker Daniels LLP (now Faegre Drinker), where she also contributed to civil rights advocacy through pro bono work. She brings additional experience from the nonprofit and intelligence sectors, including roles with the ACLU of Iowa, the U.S. Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council, and the Principal Financial Group.

Professor Steggerda-Corey earned her JD and LLM in Global Citizenship and Human Rights from Drake University Law School. She holds a BA in International Studies and Political Studies from Pepperdine University.
