Donald B. Tobin Visiting Scholar in Business Ethics Lecture: “Purpose‑Driven Compliance” by Professor Veronica Root Martinez

Maryland Carey Law welcomed Professor Veronica Root Martinez of Duke University as the 2026 Donald B. Tobin Visiting Scholar in Business Ethics. Her visit started with visiting Professor Moon’s corporate governance seminar where she presented Miscalculation of DEI Risk, an article she is currently working on.  In the evening, she presented the Tobin Visiting Scholar lecture where she presented “Purpose Driven Compliance.” She proposed a purpose‑driven compliance framework that challenges traditional enforcement‑centered models, but rather she argued for a more mission‑aligned approach to organizational ethics and explored how firms could better prevent misconduct by grounding compliance programs in organizational purpose. She offered that “compliance is not merely a system for avoiding penalties – it is a commitment to protecting dignity, enabling human flourishing, and sustaining trust in the institutions that shape our lives.”

Students who attended said they found the lecture highly engaging and appreciated the clarity and relevance of Professor Martinez’s insights, exposing some students to compliance issues for the first time The question‑and‑answer session was especially successful, with students actively participating, asking thoughtful questions, and expressing how valuable it was to speak directly with a leading scholar in corporate ethics.

Business Law Night in Baltimore

Business Law week ended with a great gathering of alumni and students at Business Law Night at Saul Ewing’s Baltimore office. Hosted by the Business Law Society, Maryland’s Intellectual Property Student Association, and the Entertainment, Sports, and Art Law, the network event gathered attorneys from all areas of business to engage with students. With more than 100 in attendance, the event was a huge success. Saul Ewing generously sponsored the event.

Though Business Law Week 2026 may be over, the important work of the faculty and staff at Maryland Carey Law to provide every possible opportunity for our students to thrive is ongoing.
