University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law Professor Maneka Sinha is the 2024 recipient of the Award for Excellence in Scholarship, presented at the fourth annual Workshop for AAPI/MENA (Asian American Pacific Islander/Middle Eastern and North African) Women in the Legal Academy, which took place October 24-26 at William & Mary Law School.
An expert in the use of forensic evidence in the criminal legal system, Sinha was recognized for her paper “The Automated Fourth Amendment,” published this year in the Emory Law Journal.
The article explores police use of new forms of technology that automate and replace human judgments in reasonable suspicion and probable cause determinations. Sinha argues that courts should be required to assess the reliability of this technology as part of Fourth Amendment reasonableness determinations and offers a framework that would allow courts to do so.
In its fourth year, the AAPI/MENA Women in the Legal Academy Workshop is aimed at building community and supporting and mentoring women in the legal academy. Previous workshops have been held at CUNY, U.C. Davis, and Penn State law schools.
