Mark your calendars! Maryland Carey Law’s celebration of all things Business Law starts on March 25. The week will feature a series of events aimed at exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and business law.
Monday, March 25 12 pm – Business Law Society Lunch and Learn: Corporate Law Opportunities with Richard, Layton & Finger
The Business Law Society, in conjunction with the Career Development Office, hosts Richard, Layton & Finger to discuss legal career opportunities available in Delaware, home of the nation’s most influential business courts. Delaware is renowned for its corporate-friendly laws, highlighted by its General Corporation Law and the specialized Court of Chancery. These factors, along with tax benefits and a business-friendly environment, have made it a preferred jurisdiction for many businesses seeking incorporation. Working with such firms as Richard, Layton, & Finger, creates opportunities to practice corporate law and other business areas. Maryland Carey Business Law Track graduates have joined Richard, Layton & Finger such as Samantha Jonjo ’23 who joined previous alums Kevin Kidwwell ’21, Daniel Kaprow ’16 and Maya Jackson ’21.
Tuesday, March 26– 1L Business Law Track Induction
The Business Law Track will welcome its newest members at the 1L Business Law Track Inductee lunch. At this informal gathering, students get the chance to socialize over lunch with current Business Law Track members as well as faculty and staff of the Business Law Program. The Business Law Track is more than just an academic program—it's a vibrant community of students, faculty, and staff united by a passion for business law. On March 26th, the Business Law Program will welcome the newest members of this community at the 1L Business Law Track Inductee lunch. This annual event serves as a cornerstone for new members, offering them a warm welcome and a chance to connect with their peers and the program's leadership. Business Law Program Director Kevin Tu will offer remarks about the importance of the Business Law Program as an institution and the many benefits it offers students.
Wednesday March 27 at 12:00pm – Adam Spence presents AI: The Attorney’s Secret Weapon
Attorney Adam Spence will visit campus to present how to use AI in legal practice. This presentation will provide a practical look at how practicing attorneys utilize AI as a secret weapon to enhance their legal practice. Attendees will gain insight into real-world applications of AI in legal research, contract analysis, document review, and more. The session will also explore ethical considerations and best practices for integrating AI into legal practice.
Speaker Adam Spence is a respected trial attorney known for his expertise in trust and estate disputes, business conflicts, and civil matters. Adam has been consistently recognized for his legal acumen, including being named a Best Lawyer in America by U.S. News & World Report and a Maryland Super Lawyer since 2012. In 2012, he was honored as one of the 40 Under 40 Very Important Professionals by the Maryland Daily Record and has been recognized as a Baltimore Smart CEO Legal Elite. In 2022, Adam played a significant role in drafting Maryland's Statute Against Financial Exploitation (the "SAFE Act"), aimed at combating financial abuse of the elderly.
Wednesday March 27 at 4:30 – Norman P. Ramsey Distinguished Lecture: The Impact of AI and Legal Tech on the Future of Legal Practice
Maryland Carey Law is pleased to welcome Jessica Nguyen as this year’s Norman P. Ramsey Distinguished Lecturer. Our speaker Jessica Nguyen, Chief Legal Officer of Lexion, who will share her insights on the multifaceted impact of AI with her lecture titled, “The Impact of AI and Legal Tech on the Future of Legal Practice.”
Lexion, an AI-powered legal intake and contract lifecycle management system company, is at the forefront of using AI across the legal landscape. This has caused a profound transformation propelled by the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and available legal technology. This presentation will explore interplay between these technological advancements and the future of legal practice. As law school students poised to embark on their professional journey, understanding the evolving role of AI and legal tech is paramount.
Nguyen is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law and is an award-winning General Counsel, including, the: 2023 Washington State Bar Association Legal Innovation Award, 2020 “Startup GC of the Year” by Corporate Counsel magazine, 2019 Top 100 Legal Influencers by The Business Journals, 2019 Best Under 40 by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and 2018 Puget Sound Business Journal 40 Under 40.
Nguyen has an extensive in-house legal career at companies of various sizes and stages and has been the first legal hire that built out the legal function of a company three times. Prior to Lexion, she was the General Counsel and first in-house attorney of PayScale, a Microsoft Office 365 attorney, and the first in-house attorney at Avalara.
The Norman P. Ramsey Business Law Fund was founded in May 1993 through the generosity of Tucky P. Ramsey in memory of her husband. Judge Ramsey, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Maryland School of Law's Class of 1947, exemplified a deep commitment to the legal profession. His career, which encompassed roles in public and private practice as well as the judiciary, included serving as a U.S. District Court Judge, managing partner at the law firm of Semmes, Bowen & Semmes, Deputy Attorney General of Maryland, and Assistant U.S. Attorney. The Ramsey Fund provides vital support for business law programs at Maryland Carey Law.
Thursday March 28 at 4:30 – JBTL Spring Symposium: The Rise and Implications of AI
The Journal of Business and Technology Law invites all to their Volume 19 Spring Symposium: The Rise and Implication of Artificial Intelligence. Featuring distinguished speakers from academia, industry, and government, the panels will explore burgeoning issues surrounding the rise of artificial intelligence.
The first panel, The Implications of Artificial Intelligence on Cybersecurity and National Security, features Paul Lekas, SVP, Head of Global Public Policy at the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA); Jason Greene, Technical Director for Civil Liberties, Privacy & Transparency at the National Security Agency; and Jody Westby, CEO of Global Cyber Risk LLC.
The second panel, Artificial Intelligence and Legal Personhood, features Tanner Mathison, Associate Counsel, Office of the Director of National Intelligence and Professor at The George Washington Law School; Nadia Banteka, Gary & Sallyn Pajcic Professor at Florida State College of Law; and John Weaver, Director, Corporate Department and Chair of the Real Estate Practice Group and Chair Artificial Intelligence Practice from McLane Middleton.
A reception will follow allowing for continued discussion on these interesting topics. The Journal of Business and Technology Law adds an important voice to the nation’s legal scholarship and provides a rewarding educational experience for the students who work on the Journal each year.
