The Maryland State Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section sponsored a career panel for aspiring intellectual property (IP) law practitioners on February 7th. The event, held at Maryland Carey Law, gathered a diverse array of professionals and students keen on exploring careers in the field of IP law.

Guest speakers consisted of esteemed IP experts such as Acting Deputy Chief Administrative Judge Kal Deshpande and Lead Administrative Judge Amanda Wieker, both serving as Patent Trial and Appeal Board judges, alongside Matthew Fischer, a seasoned IP attorney. The panel, expertly moderated by Tom Lynch, provided attendees with invaluable insights into the nuances of IP law practice.

Before and following the panel discussion, students had the opportunity to network with both panelists and fellow students, fostering connections and expanding their professional circles. The event was hosted by the Maryland Carey Law IP Program, in collaboration with the University of Baltimore IP Law Society. Students from both law schools expressed an appreciation for the opportunity to speak with professionals in the field of intellectual property.

Throughout the session, students gained valuable knowledge about various career paths within IP law, received practical advice from experienced professionals, and learned about the PTAB clerkship and the Legal Experience and Advancement Program (“LEAP”). The exchange of ideas and experiences not only enriched attendees' understanding of IP law but also provided a platform for networking and mentorship.

Heather Terech, Managing Director of Maryland’s IP Law Program commented, "The insights shared by the panel offered students a refreshing perspective on the fluidity of legal careers. It is important for them to know that their choices aren't set in stone. It was also great for the panelists to share that fulfilling careers can coexist with a balanced personal life. This event truly showcased the dynamic nature of legal practice."
