Maryland Carey Law kicks off yearlong bicentennial celebration with magazine special issue

In 2024, the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law—the fourth oldest law school in the country—marks 200 years since opening its doors as the Maryland Law Institute in 1824. Maryland Carey Law will commemorate the milestone throughout 2024 with dedicated events and programming.

Out now is a special issue of the law school’s annual magazine with a section exploring some select moments representing the institution’s enduring commitment to excellence in education, scholarship, and public service; groundbreaking work on the integration of theory and practice; and movement toward a more inclusive society. The issue also features a timeline and other historical tidbits. Typically, the Maryland Carey Law magazine is published in mid-fall, but the special issue hit alumni mailboxes in mid-December, closer to the start of the milestone year.

Celebration activities will take place in and outside the law school building as well as on the law school’s social media platforms where users will have the opportunity to share memories and pictures. Additionally, Maryland Carey Law will reveal celebratory signage around the building this semester.

“I am proud to be dean of this amazing law school as we pause to celebrate this moment in our history,” Dean Renée McDonald Hutchins writes in her magazine letter. “With solemn appreciation for the important progress accomplished by our community throughout the past two centuries, we turn our attention forward, reaching toward a bright future improving lives and laws and preparing the next generation of leaders to fight for justice and address the most pressing issues of our times.”
