There is much to celebrate in the Center for Dispute Resolution at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law (C-DRUM). Faculty Director, Deborah Thompson Eisenberg is now Vice Dean of Maryland Carey Law. She steps into the new administrative role, overseeing academic affairs and operations, from her position as associate dean for academic affairs, bringing her leadership and expertise in conflict resolution and problem-solving with her. In addition to teaching Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and the Mediation Clinic, the Piper & Marbury Professor of Law has also taught Civil Procedure and a unique 1L public interest elective, Law & Social Change. Eisenberg’s service of legal education is not limited to the University of Maryland; she is active in the national dispute resolution scholarly community, currently serving as chair regent of the American Association of Law Schools Dispute Resolution Section. Toby Treem Guerin is now Executive Director of C-DRUM. Professor Guerin has worked since the Center’s inception to advance the education and practice of dispute resolution. She instructs the Mediation Clinic and Seminar where she supervises law student-mediators and provides instruction on the theory and practice of dispute resolution. Guerin has worked with peers on community-based violence prevention efforts and interprofessional learning opportunities for students on campus. She has trained hundreds of individuals across the country on topics of co-mediation, mediator mentoring, giving and receiving feedback, peer mediation, restorative practices, public sector mediation, negotiation, and basic communication skills. For the past two years Guerin co-chaired the AALS Clinical Law Mediation and Dispute Resolution Committee and collaborated on cross-clinic mediation simulations and clinical think tank virtual meetings. She has more than 20 years of experience as a dispute resolution practitioner and mediates, facilitates, and conducts conflict coaching for the Maryland court system, state and federal agencies, prisons, and the community. With great accomplishments comes increased opportunities for growth and development of C-DRUM programs and initiatives. To assist the Center in reaching new heights, attorney Lisa Mebane joins Maryland Carey Law as managing director of C-DRUM after 14 years as an attorney in private practice and in-house positions. In this new role for the Center, Mebane manages the Dispute Resolution Program, advising students on the dispute resolution track and dispute resolution externships, competitions, and careers. She oversees the Center’s program development and various projects in public policy, professional development, and conflict resolution in education. To view her complete bio, please click here.
