On December 1, 2018, Professor Robert Percival delivered a paper on “Species Protection in Asia and North America: The Case of Migratory Birds,” at the 2018 Asian Law & Society Association Conference. The conference, whose theme was “Law in the Asian Century,” was held at Bond University in Robina, Queensland, Australia. Professor Percival’s paper was co-authored by Professor Zhao Huiyu from Shanghai Jiatong University’s KoGuan School of Law. It compared how international treaties, Chinese and U.S. law seek to protect birds who travel vast distances across several countries during their annual migrations. During his presentation Professor Percival was delighted to see in the audience his former student Chae Young-Geun who is now a professor at Inha University in Incheon, South Korea.
On January 17, 2019, Professor Seema Kakade traveled to Atlanta to speak at Emory Law School’s environmental law clinic’s 20th Anniversary Conference. She spoke on a panel titled, “Environmental Law Clinics: The Secret Weapon to Saving Our Environment” about the significant work that Maryland’s environmental law clinic conducts at local, state, national, and international levels. The panel also included Wendy Jacobs from Harvard’s environmental law clinic and Pat Parenteau from Vermont’s environmental law clinic. All three panelists talked about the value of clinics in environmental law, especially now, with increasing unmet needs due to extreme weather events, lack of scientific support for legal matters, and lack of focus on environmental justice communities. In addition, all three panelists discussed the importance of training future environmental lawyers by providing practical experience within the law school environment. The conference was organized by Emory Law School Environmental Law Clinic Director, Mindy Goldstein, who herself is a fantastic Maryland law alum!
