You already know that law school will be demanding and intense. Finding ways to relax and decompress after giving your all in class can help decrease stress. This is where your future law school’s location can help. Not only should the school’s locale provide professional development opportunities, but it should also be a place where you can see yourself living and enjoying your free time.
Maryland Carey Law is located in Baltimore City, Maryland where there is no shortage of amusements. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted operations of many businesses and organizations, and it may prevent you from visiting the city before deciding to enroll. In the meantime, the following resources are a starting point for learning more about the fun experiences Baltimore has to offer.
Food & Drink
A search for “best restaurants in Baltimore” will provide more than enough options, but check out Yelp’s Baltimore Guide and the Visit Baltimore Food Guide for more specific recommendations by neighborhood and cuisine. If you prefer to discover foodie destinations on Instagram, this list of Baltimore Foodstagrams to Follow is a great place to begin.
Steamed crabs are a local favorite and a true adventure in dining for first-timers. There are many restaurants around town that will show you how to pick the delicious meat from your crabs (Captain James Landing, Bo Brooks, and Nick’s Fish House to name a few), but a better bet is to find some classmates who know how it’s done and host your own crab feast.
Festivals & Events
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts hosts the city’s most popular events, including Light City, Artscape, the Baltimore Book Festival, and more. The city also holds multiple farmers’ markets, and ethnic and food/drink festivals. Stay up to date with virtual events with the Visit Baltimore Events Guide.
Arts & Attractions
The UMB Council for the Arts & Culture is our on-campus resource for celebrating the creativity of our community. Additionally, there are several arts education and cultural centers throughout the city, such as the Creative Alliance. The Baltimore Museum of Art and Walters Art Museum are popular art-appreciation destinations, while the National Aquarium and the Maryland Zoo allow you to see and learn about creatures from all over the world up-close.
A thriving theater scene in Baltimore brings you everything from Broadway blockbusters to small, independent works. Just steps from the law school are the legendary Hippodrome Theatre and Everyman Theatre, with Baltimore Center Stage and the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company just a few blocks away. Performing arts venues a quick light rail ride away in mid-town include the Modell Lyric and Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
Music
If you love live music, you’ll love Baltimore. Big acts often appear at Ravens Stadium and Royal Farms Arena, just a few blocks from campus. Closer to the Inner Harbor you’ll find Rams Head Live, MECU Pavillion, Canton Waterfront Park, and Baltimore Sound Stage with bands, DJs, and other acts in a range of genres. Scattered around town is a variety of smaller venues that host up-and-coming local and national performers.
Sports
Baltimore is the home of two national sports teams, the Ravens (NFL) and Orioles (MLB) – it’s a short walk from campus to the stadiums when your favorite team is in town.
Blow off some steam, get to know your classmates, and make some friends outside of law school in one of the local sports clubs or leisure leagues: Baltimore Sport and Social Club, Kickball League of Baltimore, Volo City, Baltimore Beach Volleyball, or Baltimore Community Rowing.
Nature/Outdoor Spaces
The Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks is the go-to resource for the city’s public outdoor spaces. Nearby parks include Patterson Park, Druid Hill Park, Federal Hill Park, Rash Field, Canton Waterfront Park, Wyman Park, Fort McHenry, Riverside Park, Latrobe Park, and Carroll Park.

From Federal Hill to Canton, Little Italy to Mount Vernon, Hampden to Fells Point, there are over 200 vibrant and diverse neighborhoods that make up Baltimore City. Explore Live Baltimore’s interactive neighborhood map.
