Arts and Media Law
Course Description
Intellectual Property and related legal issues associated with the film, theater, television, music, visual art, publishing, and other creative industries form the core of this course. Each industry will be discussed from a variety of perspectives, detailing the legal, business, social and ethical issues encountered by practitioners and creators. Topics will also include the role of agents and managers, contractual provisions in different creative industry contracts, protection for ideas and stories, rights of privacy and publicity, trademarks and advanced copyright issues, free speech and art-making, the effects of telecommunications policy on the media, ADR for creative communities, as well as how the internet affects all of these legal issues. The course will emphasize the ways in which digital technology has shaped these industries and how all creatives, both large and small, are deeply affected by the potpourri of laws that apply to their professional and amateur pursuits in art and media.
