Writing in Law Practice: Advising Government Agencies

Course Description

This class will focus on legal analysis and writing skills needed to successfully advise government agencies. Through several writing projects of varying lengths and formats, students will gain practical experience in the role of federal and state government agency counsel. The multiple short writing assignments may include internal advice letters, “state of the law” summaries, rapid responses to senior agency officials, interagency memoranda, and persuasive filings to quasi-judicial bodies. Substantive topics covered will include state ethics law, federal procurement law, and a substantive policy area of the student’s choosing. This course is open to second or third-year students looking to improve their writing skills and learn about typical duties of an attorney serving at a government agency. Although not prerequisites, Statutory Interpretation or Administrative Law may be helpful for students in preparing for this class. The writing done for this course will not satisfy the Advanced Writing Requirement.
