Native Americans and the Law
Course Description
This course will focus on the key areas of federal law affecting Native American tribes. It will begin by exploring the history of federal law and policy affecting Native Americans. It will then examine the doctrines and statutes that govern the exercise of power by tribal, federal, and state governments in “Indian Country” today. Throughout the course, students will be asked to consider the ethical and policy issues raised by our country’s historical treatment of Native Americans, by current federal law, and by tribes’ decisions about how to exercise their sovereignty.
