Curriculum Overview

The curriculum of the JD/MBA program is rigorously grounded in fundamental management concepts—including Strategy, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Operations, and more—and the core disciplines of Law, including Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Torts, Property and Criminal Law, and related studies. 

A student may start the dual degree program by completing two semesters in the JD Program at Maryland Carey Law before starting the MBA program at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. The student will start by completing the first year of the JD Full-Time Day Program.  The student will pursue the first year of the MBA program in the second year of the dual degree program and complete the last semester of the MBA program in the Fall of the fourth year.

A student must complete the first year of the JD Full-Time Day Program curriculum before starting coursework in the other program. With prior consultation and approval from the JD/MBA Academic Program Committee, a student may create alternative course sequencing after completion of the first year.

Degree Requirements and Completion 

A student must complete all of the degree requirements at both schools before receiving the JD and MBA degrees. A student admitted to the dual-degree program will receive 9 credits from the MBA program applied to the JD requirements and 12 credits from the JD program applied to the MBA requirements, reducing the time-to-degree from five years, if the degrees were pursued separately, to four years. 

For a JD/MBA student, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School will reduce the number of required credits in the MBA program from 54 credits to 42 credits; however, this is neither a special waiver nor exemption from any of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School graduation requirements.

Maryland Carey Law requires 85 credits to satisfy JD graduation requirements, 9 of which may be applied from the MBA program for a JD/MBA student. However, this is neither a special waiver nor exemption from any of the Maryland Carey Law graduation requirements.  A dual-degree student must complete the equivalent of five full-time semesters at Maryland Carey Law.

If a student begins the dual degree program but makes a decision to withdraw from the MBA program, the student may receive the JD degree as long as the student completes all of the JD requirements.  A JD student may apply up to 9 credits from another graduate or professional school toward the 85 credits necessary for graduation if the student obtains pre-approval to take those credits from the Maryland Carey Law registrar, even if the student is not enrolled in the dual degree program. If a student makes a decision to withdraw from the JD program, the student may receive the MBA degree but must complete 54 credits at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.
