Opportunity Within Reach
Each semester, the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security offers academic externships and employs students as research assistants – both are opportunities to gain hands-on experience while learning from experts in the field.
Externs earn credit toward their degree while addressing cutting-edge issues relating to laws and policies governing emergency response, counterterrorism, cyber threats, and public health emergencies.
Research assistants employed by CHHS have the opportunity to expand their knowledge by engaging in research that supports a wide array of staff projects ranging from exercise planning to policy development, to government consulting, and legal analysis.
The Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area is home to the country’s highest governmental offices as well as leading private-sector entities - because of this, the region has remained at the cutting edge of homeland security and crisis management. Maryland is an epicenter for cybersecurity, with leading cyber agencies such as the National Security Agency, U.S. Cyber Command, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, as well as a significant number of private sector cybersecurity firms located in the state. Students have a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience and employment prospects, given the proximity of these entities and the strong reputation of Maryland Carey Law.
